activ.plan©

ili has adapted it's own approach to designing, building and improving. We call it activ.plan because it streamlines the design and development process by:

  • Understanding our client's business context.
  • Being clear about our client's expectations.
  • Identifying the intended learning outcomes.
  • Auditing content and infrastructure.
  • Building the solution.
  • Helping our client evaluate results.

Audit the Present Situation
The importance of understanding the present situation cannot be stressed enough because it identifies:

  • The status of current content life cycle. Is it relevant? Should it be modified, or revamped?
  • Results. Are they meeting the business objectives? What are the impacts?
  • Locations of assets within the organization.
  • Learning styles and characteristics of the target audience.

Auditing the present situation is really a collaboration to figure things out and identify ideas, logistics, and the type of solutions that can improve both your operational and strategic requirements.

Develop the Impact Report
The objective of the impact report is to consolidate the audit results and identify high level goals, objectives, and specifications to define the scope of the project. For example, will it be instructor led, or a blended approach involving lecture, lab, hands-on exercises or integration with an existing, or third party Learning Management System. Will it need to be deployed over several different geographical areas? This report is the foundation for the design document.

Develop the Design Document
The design document identifies how the content will be deployed. For example, will it be instructor led, or a blended approach involving lecture, lab, hands-on exercises or integration with an existing Learning Management System (LMS) or third party LMS. Will the content need to be deployed over geographical areas? Every design document is tailored to the client's requirements. Typically the design document will include the following:

  • Detailed program schedule and budget.
  • Clear and complete description of the course or curriculum or leaning solution.
  • Course map or course path.
  • Description of the target population.
  • Directions for administering the course.
  • Pre-course requirements for the audience if applicable.
  • Directions for administering and scoring tests.
  • Technical specifications and requirements.
  • Directions for guidance, assistance, and evaluation of the participants.
  • List of all tasks and activities for instruction.
  • Program of Instruction - How the course is to be taught.
  • Copy of all the training material, i.e., training outlines, student guides, and so forth.
  • Instructor and staff training requirements (needed and accomplished.)
  • Any other documents and logistics related to the administration of the course (LMS integration, registration, maintenance and support.)

The design document may also identify options such as electronic performance support systems (EPSS), along with ancillary materials such as job aids, print, video or other blends to support the solution.

Formative Evaluation and Develop-Test-Deploy
Once the final design document has been approved, development and formative evaluation begins. We have taken formative evaluation as defined in traditional instructional models and have implemented it throughout the activ.plan process to streamline design and development and to identify and fix logistical, content and technical, and problems to ensure a successful deployment. This is accomplished by usability testing and prototypes that provide relevant information to modify and improve the product. activ.plan uses many attributes in common with the ISD model, and stresses the importance of continuous analysis and evaluation.

During and near the end of a program's life cycle it may be necessary to measure its effectiveness. To accomplish this, a summative evaluation is used to focus on four major areas as defined by the Kirkpatrick methodology: reaction, learning, behavior, and business results. These four methods are used to obtain data and help people improve their performance and establish a road map to potential revisions.
