D-B-I Approach

THE D-Design
Using the foundations established by the instructional design profession, interactiv.lee, inc. is able to first focus on the human element to determine needs and skills. ili assists clients in planning their training by developing a set of specifications, which includes instructional objectives, flowcharts, content presentation, and media analysis. This information is included in a design document. The design document is essentially a road map that allows any organization to integrate awareness, internal and external corporate communications, skill-based learning, training, and mandatory/regulatory compliance initiatives with the best practices of interactive instructional design principles. This approach reinforces a company's unique style, branding, and culture for success.

THE B-Build
Using the approved plans and specifications from the design document ili builds the application using the appropriate media.

Main idea:Build for maximum scalability, flexibility, durability, and usability.
Tools:Software-custom or COTS.
Solutions:Web, LMS, KMS, EPSS, CD-ROM, DVD, Curriculum Development, Print or Blended.

THE I-Improve
Our goal is to improve employee performance and productivity levels to help them do their jobs better. This is accomplished by:

  • Developing engaging instructional experiences.
  • Developing people centered learning (Ellis, Wagner, & Longmire, 1999.)
  • Using blended or hybrid solutions to enhance knowledge and performance.
  • Increasing interactivity using role-based scenarios relevant to their needs.
  • Maintaining appropriate content focused on the target audience.
  • Developing ancillary materials and activities to enhance learning (job-aids, learning objects, reference cards, checklists operating procedures, role plays, case studies, demonstrations, guided practice, etc.)

How is DBI implemented? The ili DBI approach is based on several instructional design theories that lend themselves to adaptation for blended e-learning. We feel the most adaptable is Merrill's Component Display Theory. This particular model focuses on learning which is based on content (concepts, facts, procedures and principles) and performance (rules, examples, recall, practice and feedback.)

Merrill contends that people learn by remembering, finding and using information. The model is a good framework for individual control, which is, allowing the individual to select content and information that enhances their performance.

The role of the instructional designer is to analyze situations in a systematic manner and solve problems to improve performance. In order to do this effectively, ili adheres to the core competencies established by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction IBSTPI
